North Kerry Championship

Emmets Seniors and U16's enjoyed a good day at the office in O'Sullivan Park Finuge on Sunday last 20th November where Emmets Seniors qualified for the semi final of the North Kerry Senior Championship after defeating St. Senan's by 2-02 to 0-14. This game served as a curtain raiser to the U16 Final where Emmets took on the combination side of Finuge/St. Senan's where after a hard fought battle Emmets gained the title with a two point victory. Emmets and Finuge/Senan's were two very even sides throughout this game with nothing separating both teams at the break the combination side went two points clear in the opening ten minutes but come excellent defending by Emmets Kenneth Kelliher and Mark Kennedy ensured that Davy Keane and Micheal Stack could even up the scores. Finuge/Senan's picked off some fine scores before the half but the ever reliable Eimbin O'Brien slotted over a fine point and this was followed by one from Darragh Leahy. Finuge/Senan's pushed on another two points after the break as Jake Moriarty sent a long ball into Dara Hughes he saw his effort trickle away to the right on the kick out Finuge/Senan's drove forward with a rasping shot from David Foran hit the crossbar and let off for the Listowel side. Jake Moriarty again intercepted the kick out found Rici Hanley who slotted over point to keep two between the sides. A jubilant Rici Hanley accepted the North Kerry trophy from North Kerry Chairman Tomas Keane.

Emmets got off to a rocky start in this quarter final replay as in the opening three minutes of play saw Sean O'Connell net a penalty for the Senan's side. However, Emmets defense regrouped and from their to the final whistle did very well as amazingly it took until a minute into injury time of the half before Senan's would score again where O'Connell pointed a free, leaving half time Emmets 0-7 St. Senan's 1-01. Noel Kennelly opened the scoring for Emmets on the fifth minute followed quickly with another three from Cox, Kennelly and Barry to bring the game back to a tie. Padraig Buckley and Denis Walsh held a commanding hold at midfield as Senan's struggled to contain a rampant Emmets attack lead by Ger McCarthy, Billy Doyle and Noel Kennelly. As the second half enveloped, Senan's charged at the Listowel sides defence but as in the first half Emmets defence would not be beaten. However it was not all plain sailing for Emmets as they suffered at times from wasteful possession with poor shot selection and wayward shooting. Points from Cox, Barry and Kennelly extended Emmets lead to 5 but in a puzzling decision Senan's were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute O'Connell again netted to leave only two between the sides. Game on with four minutes to go Emmets displayed more composure and maybe their experience for contesting 7 out last 8 North Kerry Championships gave them a slight edge as Conor Cox, Derek Galvin and the shining Jack McGuire slotted over their points to give Emmets passage into the Semi Final where they meet with Championship favourites Finuge on December 4th.

This was a game in which Emmets never looked like loosing but a young sticky St. Senan's side never gave up and displayed tremendous resolve to bring the game back to two points. This was a huge team effort by the Listowel side with a huge display from it's defence. Man of the match Jack McGuire.
