Emmets Ladies Victory Social:

You would be forgiven for thinking last Saturday night was Lady’s Day at the races as the players, coaches, family and friends of Listowel Emmets Ladies Gaelic Football club descended on the Listowel Arms Hotel for the clubs’ inaugural social and 10th birthday celebrations. Almost 100 people attended this fantastic function to honour the work of all those who started the club back in 2001 and all those who through the years have developed the club into one of the leading Ladies Football clubs in Kerry. The club chairman Kevin O’Sullivan reflected back on the great success of the many underage and adult teams of the past 10 years culminating in the club securing the Junior A county title last year. He thanked all those involved in the club and gave a special mention to the club sponsors: Charlie Cantillon of Church St, Garvey’s SuperValu ,John Mc Guire of Mc Guire's Pharmacy, Nick Roberts of Listowel Garden and Pet Centre, and Listowel Community Centre.

Donal Barry representing the Kerry Ladies County Board praised the club for the progression that it has made and for now being one of the trend setters for Ladies Football in Kerry. From the North Kerry Board John Barry reflected on the contribution of members of the club in setting up the North Kerry board and for always promoting the game in the area. The founder of the club and current president Billy Keane spoke passionately about the players who started with the club 10 years ago and who now are some of the key players on the adult teams in the club. He praised the efforts of Rose Wall and Gemma Hannon who have been the principal administrators in the club over the 10 years.

The 2010 Junior A panel received their county league and championship medals. Catherine Galvin was honoured as club person of the year to recognise her commitment to the club over the past year as the first aider and female liaison officer for the club.

Aoife Hannon received the most improved young player award while Amanda O’Donnell was awarded Youth Player of the year following some fantastic performances for the team last year. Aoife Tarrant secured Most Improved Senior Player of the year award for her dependability and reliability on the pitch all year. Rakel Mardones received Junior Player of the year award, Rakel had a great year with Emmets in 2010 a girl whom we have come to rely on and always has a smile on her face! She is probably the first Basque woman to receive such an award and it goes to no better person, well done Rakel.

It was then to the senior player of the year award which since its induction has been voted for by the players themselves. This award with to Roscommon native Mary Beades who is now settled in Listowel for the last two years and has transformed the Club. She has been involved with every aspect of the club from Juvenile to Senior, from Finance to Development. Emmets are very lucky to have such a hard working member, however this award comes from the players and its on the field where it counts. Mary has certainly not let the side down and on the pitch she is equally dedicated, hard working and fearless, well done Mary.

The entertainment on the night was supplied by The Promise with some enthusiastic assistance from many of the guests! The club would like to thank all those who assisted to make the night such a success, in particular Jim Galvin, Rose Wall and Gemma Hannon. Roll on 2011, and to another successful year.
