Listowel Emmets 1-09 Ballylongford 1-08

This fifth round North Kerry League match played in Listowel’s Frank Sheehy Park saw two relatively young sides take to the field in what turned out to be an exciting affair.

It took fifteen minutes for the first score to be registered by Ballylongford but Listowel, following two consecutive defeats were never going to lie down in this fixture.

David Keane opened the scoring for Listowel in the 16th minute and this was followed by points coming from David Sheehy, Keane again and Michael Stack.

Ger McCarthy sliced through the Ballylongford defence after 25 minutes putting Listowel 0-05 to 0-04 going in at half time.

The second half saw the standard of football improve dramatically as Emmets grew in confidence. Ger McCarthy’s surging runs from the half back line caused a lot of problems for the Ballylongford defence.

David Keane collected his third score of the game half-way through the second half with a neatly worked move, sensibly hand-passing the ball over the bar leaving the scoreline six points to four in favour of the Emmets.

Listowel’s shorter hand-passing game began to work effectively in the second half as they totally dominated possession in large parts of the half.

Eimhin O’Brien was next on the score sheet for Listowel and soon after he turned provider for a Michael Stack goal leaving Listowel 1-7 to 4 in front.

Ballylongford fought back at this stage kicking 1-3 without return, their goal coming from the boot of corner forward Cian O’Connor however Emmets improved steeliness ensured they were not going to let this game away from them. David Keane popped up again to kick his fourth point of the game to keep two points between the sides.

Corner back John Heaphy on one of his many forays up the field kicked Listowels final point of the game to ensure Emmets first victory of the North Kerry League.

Emmets Ladies

The Seniors began the County League with an away game against Laune Rangers but unfortunately lost on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-9.  The home side opened brightly and struck for 2 early goals. A goal by Norma O'Sullivan from a penalty which was won by Fiona Murphy saw the start of a fight back which saw the team trail 2-5 to 1-6 at half time.  Despite some stout defending Listowel could count themselves to lose in the end.  It took an exceptional display of point taking from Kerry Ladies senior forward Patrice Dennehy to give Laune Rangers a lead that they would not give up despite a goal from Miriam O Keeffe which kept us in the game.  The players can be proud of their effort and performance and will look to build on this for the rest of the season. Next up for the girls is home game against Southern Gaels, date to be confirmed.
The team management would like to thank all those that brought cars to the game.
Team: Katie Wall, Louise Horgan, Breda Lane, Sarah Moriarty, Aoife Shine, Marguerite O’Flaherty, Aoife Kennelly, Norma O Sullivan (1-1), Sarah O’Brien (0-1), Miriam O’Keeffe (1-4), Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Fiona Murphy, Mary Beades(0-2) Subs used: Catherine Flavin, Lauren Flavin, Emma Thornton, Aisling Grimes, Megan Fealey, Maimie O’Flynn (0-1).

Meanwhile in Listowel, Emmets Ladies fielded two U12 teams at Frank Sheehy Park. Listowel Lions won their game in Division 1 against Austin Stacks and  Listowel Tigers lost their game to our neighbours Ballyduff in Division 3. It was fantastic to see over 28 girls togged out in Emmets jersey at this age group. A big thank you to all the parents who came out to support the girls on the day.
