Credit Union Senior County League Division 1: Round 7
Listowel Emmets 0-9
Austin Stacks 1-16
This seventh round county league clash between Listowel Emmets and Austin Stacks was played in blustery conditions in Frank Sheehy Park Listowel. Emmets have been going through a bit of a tough patch while Stacks on the other hand are still in contention for a league and senior championship double.
The first half was a fairly one sided affair with a young and fairly inexperienced Emmets side trying their best to defend against wave after wave of Stack’s attacks.
Darragh O’Brien opened the scoring for Austin Stacks in the second minute and went on to have a fine game at corner forward.
Stacks were dominant at midfield with Kirby and Guthrie winning a lot of primary possession and with good ball going into their inside forwards, Stacks stretched to a 0-7 to 0-2 lead after a quarter of an hour played. Noel Kennelly and Ricky Halpin getting Listowels two scores.
Brendan Guiney and Michael Lynch both took good scores in the 19th and 30th minutes respectively to keep Listowel with some chance of a revival in the second half but it was not looking good for the Fealesiders as Stacks went in at half time leading 0-11 to 0-4.
The second half saw more of the same with Emmets resorting to lateral passing across their half back and half forward line. While having a decent amount of possession throughout the lack of movement in the inside forward line lay in stark contrast to the constant effective movement of the Stacks forwards.
Stacks were 0-14 to 0-6 ahead half way through the second half largely through the boot of free taker Shane Carroll and to be fair the Emmets men never gave up and kept their side of the scoreboard ticking over throughout with points coming from substitute Darragh Leahy and a brace from Noel Kennelly.
This game’s fate was sealed in the 55th minute with a spectacular goal effort from Stacks substitute Darren Tiernan. Lively debate broke out in the stand on whether he intended the ball to go under the bar but it left no doubt as to where the points were going in this fixture, finishing with a scoreline of 0-9 to 1-16.

Emmets Ladies:
The U8’s and U10’s had a fabulous trip to Rathmore for the Munster blitz last weekend. A fantastic day out and all the girls love playing in it. Each team played 4 games on the day against teams from Tipperary, Clare, Cork, Waterford and Limerick. Thank you to all those who traveled with the girls on the day and gave such great support. The girls will have plenty of opportunity to put their skills on display this week when they will play Desmonds at home in the Boys School at 7pm on Monday and then Duagh at home Frank Sheehy Part at 7pm on Thursday.
The Listowel Emmets Coiste na nÓg Summer Camp in Frank Sheehy Park was a great success with a large number of boys and girls taking part. Thanks to all the coaches who helped out and a special thanks to our Emmets Ladies Sarah O’Brien, Sarah Moriarty, Megan Feeley, Abby McMahon and Leah Henry, who were brilliant coaches and role models.
As their season begins to wind down the coaches and mentors of the U12’s are continuing to provide plenty of football for the U12’s. Following on from the challenge match with Duagh the girls played another challenge match this week with Ballyduff. Thanks to all in Duagh and Ballyduff for hosting.
After their disappointing loss against Na Gael the U16’s have shown great spirit and determination by winning their next match against Fingue / St Senans last week. We are now awaiting results of upcoming games to see where we will be placed in the County League.
Best of luck to the Senior Ladies who play Corca Dhuibhne in Lispole this week and the U15’s who take on Glenflesk also away this week
