North Kerry Championship Quarter Final

Emmets 0-9 V Moyvane 1- 05

Listowel Emmets began their North Kerry championship campaign in icy conditions in Ballybunnion on Saturday last (25th Nov) after Ballylongford was deemed unplayable.

Emmets started well with nice movement of play between Ger McCarthy and Brian Scanlon, with 10mins gone Moyvane opened proceedings but within seconds Emmets responded, a foul on Brian Scanlon saw Noel Kennelly put the free over the bar.

It was nip tuck for the rest of the half, but some sloppy defending by Emmets saw the ball in the back of the net for Moyvane leaving the half time score 1-05 to 0-4.

The opening 10minutes of the second half saw Emmets Paudie Buckley and Tadhg Kennelly taking command at midfield, Kennelly sent the ball into Galvin, who passed it to Scanlon and drove it into the small square where it connected with Noel Kennelly and sent it to the back of the net only to be deemed a square ball.

In the final stages of the game, Seamus Mulvihill eventually sent Cathal O'Connor to the side line and Moyvane were reduced to 14men. Emmets scored 5points in this half with no reply from Moyvane, Final score 1-05 to 0-9.

Team: D. McCarthy, F.Reen, L.Keane,S. O'Mahony, S.Quinn, B.Guiney(0-1), G.McCarthy, P.Buckley, T.Kennelly, B.Doyle (C), M.Kennelly(0-1), D. Galvin (0-1) N.Kennelly (0-4) B.Scanlon (0-3)

Subs: S.McCarthy for B.Doyle

Kieran Corridon North Kerry Intermediate Semi Final

Emmets B  0- 5 Ballyduff B 2- 7

Ballybunnion on Oct 1st @ 12.00 Noon

Emmets were missing a number of regulars and never got going in this contest. Ballyduff controlled the game from the very start as they had a strong hold in the middle third of the pitch leaving a half time score 1-5 to 0-2. Emmets started brightly in the second half to reduce the deficit to 3 points but a more determined Ballyduff outfit ran out easy winners in the end. Best for Listowel were the Full back line of Mike O'Connor, Mike Moroney and Kieran O'Connor who could not be faulted for this loss.

Emmets Minors
County League Semi Final.

Emmets 3-8 to St. Pats 1-7.

Played in Mountcoal last Friday evening (5th May)  Emmets proved too strong against St. Pats to book a place in the final this weekend. Emmets started brightly and led  1-1 to 0-1 within the first 10 minutes. The point coming from a Byran McGuire free with the left foot and a individual goal by Charlie o Brien after good defensive work by the Emmets backs. Further points from Michael O'Leary (0-1), Charlie O Brien (0-2 Frees). At this time, Emmets lossed midfielder Tarik Barry through injury. A  Robbie OHanlon point and a Jack Buckley fisted goal from a 45 gave Emmets a commanding lead at half time of 2-5 to 0-2. The second half started with Emmets taking the game to St. Pats with a early point from Charlie O Brien. St. Pats came more into the game but a looping Jack Buckley goal with his left leg put Listowel well into control. St Pats still played on and added 5 points. Further Emmets points were scored by David Sheehy and Charlie o Brien to leave Listowel well on top. St Pats scored a late goal at the final whistle to leave the final score 3-8 to 1-7. Overall this was a good team effort but outstanding on the night were Charlie O'Brien, Robbie O'Hanlon and Mike O'Leary in attack. Jack Buckley had a fine display at midfield with Kevin Henry, Kieran O'Connor & Peter O'Loughlin proving very solid in defense.

DESMONDS V EMMETS
(DIV1) SENIOR CO LEAGUE RD3 SAT 15th April
Listowel senior squad travelled to Castleisland at the weekend and earned two more vital points in round three of the Credit Union County League with a (1-07) to (0-8) win. The last time the two sides met Listowel had a two point home win against the Castleisland side. Desmonds were more dominant early on in this meeting between the sides and despite playing against the breeze managed to keep the ball in the visitors half for at least the opening ten or fifteen minutes of the match. However, despite the amount of possession, the home side opened the scores with a fisted effort in the 10th minute after kicks had gone wide. A minute later Brian Scanlon was fouled and Noel Kennelly added Listowels first score of the match. Listowels second score came in the 17th minute as Conor Moriarty caught a high ball just outside the square and offload to Paudi Buckley. Desmonds equalised immediately but Brian Scanlon added two mores scores from forty yards. Maurice Whelans score on the 28th minute separated the sides at high time. Desmonds (0-4) Emmets (0-5). Castleisland equalised three minutes into the second half however, Brian Scanlon shook off his marker and was through for a goal opportunity along with Bill Doyle who blasted to the Desmonds net. Castleisland responded with another a minute later. Then in the 12th minute Shane Quinn fought his way around three Castleisland defenders and took his opportunity from thirty-five yards against a strong breeze that passed between the posts. Castleisland replied again with another. Then in the 46th minute Noel Kennelly was fouled 15yds out adding and Listowel were three ahead in the last quarter of the game. Desmonds threw everything at their opponents and tight marking from Listowel defence and more wide kicking meant the home side were just able to add another score deep into injury time as the game ended Desmonds (0-8) Emmets (1-07) Listowel Team; Declan McCarthy, Fergus Reen, Liam Keane, Adam Toomey, Ger McCarthy, Robbie Harrington, Shane Quinn (0-1), Paudi Buckley (0-1), Brendan Kelly, Aongus Fitzgerald, Maurice Whelan (0-1), Noel Kennelly (02,f), Conor Moriarty, Brian Scanlon (0-2), Billy Doyle(c) (1-0). Subs; Mikey Kennelly, Sean McCarthy, John James Buckley, Pat Carmody, Pa Galvin, Sean Mahoney.

ST MARYS V EMMETS
(DIV1) SENIOR CO LEAGUE RD2 SUN 2ND April
Listowel Senior Squad travelled to Caherciveen at the weekend to take on St Marys in round two of the Credit Union Div1 Senior Co League. Both teams held out and a (1-09) to (0-12) result was a fair outcome in the end for both teams who battled endlessly and with a very strong wind on the day. Listowel fought against the breeze in the first half and had a very early two point opening lead with a point from Derek Galvin in the opening minute and a free converted by Noel Kennelly in the fourth minute. The lead was short lived however, as the home team were very productive with the wind and earned seven unanswered scores in the first half despite Brian Scanlons rebounded shot from off the crossbar in the 20th minute that looked like it had hopped just inside the line. The Marys defence were instantaneous in the clearance and kept on to their two point lead adding another three before half time as the scores stood St Marys (0-7) Listowel Emmets (0-2). Listowel needed of scores and in the opening minute of the second half a long ball sent in with the wind was knocked down by Mickey Kennelly inside in full forward to Brian Scanlon who offloaded to Aongus Fitzgerald and the ball was blasted without any hesitation to the back of the home net. Wind was a big factor throughout and it looked like the visiting team was benefiting equally as long ball gatherings were converted in the second half, with scores from Brian Scanlon and Derek Galvin both efforts involving Ger McCarthy left nothing between the sides after ten minutes. The game was certainly in the melting pot from here on eventhough the visiting team managed to pull ahead by two frees taken by Brendan Kelly in the 47th and 49th minutes and a long kick from 50yds out taken by Brian Scanlon that notched between the posts adding huge life to his side. At the opposite end a brilliant shot stop by the Emmets keeper kept the visitors still ahead. However, the strength and depthness of the South Kerry side was once more beginning to present itself more and more on the field in the latter quarter of the game. Bryan Sheehan once again added two more scores in the 53rd and 54th minutes on top of his six point tally from the first half and only a single point separated the sides. Then St Marys found the Listowel net. However, the umpire had already signalled to the referee just prior for a free out as the Listowel corner back Adam Toomey was pushed over the end line with the ball in his possession. While the umpire was still signalling to the referee the St Marys attackers got possession and within seconds had stuck the ball in the back of the Listowel net. There was pandemonium and confusion with frustrations on both sides and after consulting with both umpires the referee awarded a 50yard free in and disallowed the goal. Tensions were high with five minutes of normal time remaining. Listowel still one ahead after the free awarded was gathered and delivered back out the field and defence became attack for Listowel as Liam Keane earned a free in the middle of the field which he sent long to Brian Scanlon who was also fouled in close distance and converted by Brendan Kelly. However, the home team attacked with everything in the closing minutes and Bryan Sheehan got the equalising score in the 59th minute. A massive 45 yard kick off his left went high against the breeze and sailed between the posts before another was fisted over by Niall O’Driscoll for his second when it looked like the goal was on to kill off the game. The visitors were suddenly one behind going into injury time and very lucky to be still in with a chance of avoiding throwing away the opportunity of taking something on the long trip home. With seconds remaining and with nothing to lose, Brendan Kelly took his chance and went for posts from a distance angle and saved his team from defeat in the dying moments of the game. It was all over once the next kick out was placed and finished level between the sides St Marys (0-12) Emmets (1-09). Listowel team and scorers; Declan McCarthy, Fergus Reen, Liam Keane, Adam Toomey, Ger McCarthy, Robbie Harrington, Shane Quinn, Paudi Buckley, Noel Kennelly (0-1,f), Aongus Fitzgerald (1-0), Brendan Kelly (0-4,3f), Billy Doyle, Mikey Kennelly, Brian Scanlon (0-2), Derek Galvin (0-2). Subs; Sean McCarthy, John James Buckley, Pat Carmody, Pa Galvin, Sean Mahoney

EMMETS V AUSTIN STACKS
(DIV1) SENIOR CO LEAGUE RD1 SUN 26th March

Listowel had most of the possession in the opening quarter of the game but it was the visiting team that made greater use of the ball and were two points ahead by the 8th minute of the game. Listowel hit a number of wides before eventually opening their account in the 13th minute. A high lofty ball was won by Mikey Kennelly and a free was awarded which was converted by Noel Kennelly. The only goal of the game came in the 18th minute. A clearance by Shane Quinn out of Listowels goal area culminated in an attack by Maurice Whelan and Brian Scanlon who offloaded to Mikey Kennelly and the ball was rifled by Kennelly into the Austin Stacks net. The home side were suddenly two points in front. Stacks mounted an immediate response and were level with their opponents within a couple of minutes and went two points in front again in the 29th and 30th minutes before Derek Galvin managed to narrow the margin to a single point just before half time as the scores stood. Austin Stacks (0-06) Emmets (1-02). Two minutes into the second half Mikey Kennelly equalised and soon after Noel Kennelly had a chance to put Listowel with a free from 40 yds but Kennellys kick came off the top of the upright and the visitors made no haste in getting the ball out of the danger zone. However, in the 45th minute of the game the home side were finding space in amongst the Austin Stacks defence and Brian Scanlon was picked out on his own and Scanlon easily slotted over. Then just over a minute later Maurice Whelan scored from the same position on his own and the home team were two points ahead and were beginning to look like they might win out the tight and closely contested opening round. At the other end the visitors were unlucky as a high kick came off the upright and wide much to the relief of the home crowd as every score mattered in the final quarter of the match. With just over ten remaining Noel Kennelly was awarded a free from 30yds and put his side three ahead. The visitor’s reply came a couple of minutes later and with five minutes of normal time remaining only a single point separated the sides. Stacks fought hard to reclaim the lead. A ball thrown in by the referee right outside the Listowel square was almost blasted at goal but a superb block down from Robbie Harrington kept the home side in contention to hold out and a couple of switches on the Listowel team saw Mikey Kennelly and Billy Doyle retired with the youth of Aongus Fitzgerald and Sean McCarthy added to the foray. Then with three minutes remaining Paudi Buckley struck a long ball right between the posts to restore the home sides two-point lead. All of Stacks efforts to turn matters in their favour were thwarted either resulting from wides or block downs or interceptions by the Emmets defence. At the other end Aongus Fitzgerald not long on for Billy Doyle created space on his own in attack and slotted between the posts. It was looking more and more bleak for the visitors and in injury time Brian Scanlon added his second score of the game as the game finished Listowel Emmets (1-09) Austin Stacks (0-8). Listowel Team and scorers; Declan McCarthy, Fergus Reen, Liam Keane, Adam Toomey, Ger McCarthy, Robbie Harrington, Shane Quinn, Paudi Buckley (0-1), Noel Kennelly (0-2,frees), Brendan Kelly, Maurice Whelan (0-1), Billy Doyle (c), Derek Galvin (0-1), Brian Scanlon (0-2), Mikey Kennelly (1-01), Subs; Aongus Fitzgerald (0-1), Sean McCarthy, John James Buckley, Sean Mahoney, Pa Galvin, Conor Moriarty, Shane McCarthy, Declan Mawe, Darren Halpin, Sean O’Connell.

TARBERT V EMMETS
(DIV1 SENIOR NK LEAGUE RD6 SAT 12th March
Tarbert had most of the possession early on in the game and converted a free in the opening minute in a game contested man for man evenly throughout and ended (0-11) a piece in the end. It took the Listowel side a little more time to impose themselves on the game. A converted free in the 9th minute by Brendan Kelly opened the scores for Listowel and was quickly followed up by points from Aongus Fitzgerald and Sean McCarthy off his left in the 10th and 11th minutes. The Emmets defence were clearing up everything that was coming their way and with a bit of wind advantage Kelly put another long distance 50yd kick between the posts in the 19th minute. A couple of minutes later Derek Galvin sold lots of dummies to his marker and took his kick not far from the end line that sailed between the posts to add the fifth for the visitors. Tarbert had only one score to their credit despite a very strong early presence up and down the field early on in the game. However, Tarbert added three unanswered points in the 24th, 27th, and 28th minutes before Listowel responded as Derek Galvin sold more dummies and made no doubt about the accuracy of his kick in the 30th minute. The scores at half time stood Tarbert (0-4) Listowel (0-6). Listowel earned a free within a minute of play resuming and Brenden Kelly slotted over the bar from 30yds but within five minutes Tarbert used the wind well and had levelled with their opponents. The game was in the melting pot and in the 11th minute of the second half Brian Scanlon put the visitors ahead again and a high ball from Sean O’Connell into the square in the 47th minute was punched over by Conor Moriarty and Listowel had a two point lead. Tarbert evened the sides (0-09) apiece with ten minutes remaining before adding another in the 24th that was cancelled by another score from Derek Galvin soon after. The game could have ended in the 56th minute when Brendan Kelly was let loose but was pushed on his way towards the Tarbert danger area. A free was awarded which he converted although he might have preferred the advantage to exploit a likely goal opportunity. Listowel held onto possession as much as they could pray for the final whistle. However, Tarbert threw everything at Listowel in the closing minutes and a great save by Declan McCarthy and another daisy cutter of a shot that went inches wide of the upright left the visitors barely in the game. Tarbert were awarded a free in the 59th minute that dropped to the goalkeeper and it looked like Tarbert had exhausted and utilised all their chances to salvage a draw. A minute into injury time however, the home side managed to drive the ball sailing over the cross bar and it was even Stevens after that in an even justified drawn match. Well done to both and to the referee Eddie Anthony Walsh. Listowel team and scores; Declan McCarthy, Fergus Reen, Pa Galvin, Adam Twomey, Sean O’Connell, Robbie Harrington, Ger McCarthy, Paudi Buckley, Brendan Kelly (0-03,2f), Aongus Fitzgerald (0-1), John James Buckley (0-1), Brian Scanlon (0-1), Conor Moriarty (0-1), Sean McCarthy (0-1), Derek Galvin (0-3). Subs, Billy Doyle(c), Declan Mawe, Darren Halpin, Conor O’Neill

MOYVANE V EMMETS
(DIV1 SENIOR NK LEAGUE RD1(Re-Scedule) SAT 11th March
The last time the two sides met was in November 2005 in the NK Championship Quarter Final decider, Listowel had a fairly convincing (0-10) to (0-02) win over Moyvane. Emmets travelled to Moyvane again on Saturday and secured a similar margin defeating Moyvane (1-12) to (1-04). This time there were more scores by both teams and a game that was a bit more exciting from any spectactors point of view. Despite an even enough contest in the opening quarter of the game, Listowel nonetheless seemed to grow in confidence to take good overall control of the game. Liam Keane opened the scores in the first minute of the game followed up by another score from Derek Galvin in the 5th minute and despite a few missed opportunities, Moyvane eventually got on the score sheet in the 7thand 8th minute to even the sides. Within less than a minute however, the ball slipped through the hands of one of the Listowel defender and Moyvane immediately capitalised and sent the ball low to the back of the Emmets net and were suddenly three points ahead. Moyvanes lead however, was short lived as Brian Scanlon blasted a goal to the Moyvane net in the 11th minute followed by a another point two minutes later. Tthe sides were once again level. The game hung in the balance for six or seven minutes with the ball drifting up and down the field. Then in the 20th minute Brendan Kelly drove a long ball between the posts followed by another score from Derek Galvin before Kelly converted a 50yd free in the 24th to put the visitors three points in the lead. Moyvane didn’t take long to respond and added their fourth score in 27th as the first half ended Emmets (1-06) Moyvane (1-03). The second half ended almost entirely a one sided affair as Listowel added seven more scores to Moyvanes one additional score in the second half. However, Listowel had hit two more scores on target early on from Derek Galvin and Sean McCarthy in full forward and with just over fifteen minutes remaining the visitors really opened up on the Moyvane defence with three of the finest scores of the match scored in the 45th, 46th and 52nd minute by Liam Keane, Robbie Harrington (all on his own a fine kick off the left boot high and dead centre over the bar), and Aongus Fitzgerald distance kick was pure quality stuff . Derek Galvin added his fourth with a couple of minutes remaining before Paudi Buckley sent a long high ball between the posts at the end of normal time. Full time score Emmets (1-13) Moyvane (1-04) Listowel team and scorers; Declan McCarthy, Fergus Reen, Pa Galvin, Adam Twomey, Shane Quinn, Robbie Harrington (0-1), Ger McCarthy, Paudi Buckley (0-1), Liam Keane (0-2), Aongus Fitzgerald (0-1), Brendan Kelly (0-2, 1f), John James Buckley, Brian Scanlon (1-01), Sean McCarthy (0-01), Derek Galvin (0-04). Subs, Conor Moriarty, Declan Mawe, Darren Halpin.

EMMETS v NA GAEIL
(TRALEE DISTRICT MINOR LEAGUE RD2) SUN 5th March
Emmets Minors secured a two point victory at home on Sunday against Na Gaeil in the second round of the Tralee District League. Emmets led (2-01) to (0-02) at half time with fourteen players. However, the visitors made maximum use of the spare man on the field in the second half and managed to cancel out the home sides five point lead to eventually lead by a single point before Jack Buckley scored a spectacular goal to seal victory for Emmets. Full time score Emmets (3-02) Na Gaeil (2-03).

BEALE v EMMETS
(DIV1 SENIOR NK LEAGUE RD4) SUN 28th Feb
Emmets travelled to Beale at the weekend and with a strong northerly breeze
Listowel got off to a three point lead with scores coming from Mikey
Kennelly and Angus Fitzgerald. Beale converted a free in the 10th minute to
open their account and converted another free five minutes later. Very
shortly after Noel Kennelly added another for Listowel in the 16th minute
before Mikey Kennelly converted his third score in the 21st minute. With a
couple of minutes remaining in the first half Beale dug in deep to claim
their third score against a stiff breeze while Sean McCarthy restored the
visitors three point lead just before referee Stephen Mulvihill blew up for
half time as scores stood Beale (0-3) Emmets (0-6). The game was looking
slightly one-sided even as Mikey Kennelly put Listowel four ahead only
minutes after play resumed. However, by mid-way in the second half Beale
seemed to ahve the measure taken of their opponents and with strong wind in
their favour kept the attack mainly at the opposition end of the pitch and
took their chances well with a series scores in the second half. It looked
like Listowel had taken the foot off the pedal and if it were only for a
matter of minutes it was enough to let the Beale side back into the game.
With only one point separating the sides it was Listowels turn to retaliate
and restore a better lead in the closing stages of the game but a seconds
lapse of concentration culminated with the ball suddenly in the back of the
Listowel net. A kick out quickly taken was narrowly intercepted and the
Beale full forward took his chance that was reflected goalwards. Instead of
facing the pssibility of a draw now Listowel were suddenly two points in
deficit with a strong breeze against their attack and an opposition that
were well in control of matters in the latter quarter of the game with the
home side adding another score before the final whistle. Full time score,
Beale (1-07) Emmets (0-7). Listowel Team and Scores; Declan McCarthy,
Adam Twomey, Paudi Thornton, Robbie Harrington, Sean O'Connell, Paudi Buckley,
Shane Quinn, Liam Keane, Noel Kennelly (0-1), Brendan Kelly, JJ Buckley,
Aongus Fitzgerald (0-1), Billy Doyle (c), Mikey Kennelly (0-4,1f), Sean
McCarthy (0-1) Subs; Ger McCarthy, Conor Moriarty, David Ryan, Sean Mahoney
and Pa Galvin.

EMMETS v BROSNA
(DIV1 SENIOR NK LEAGUE RD3) SUN 19th Feb
Emmets Senior team suffered a narrow one-point defeat at the weekend to Brosna in Listowel in Round 3 of Division One NK League. Listowel looked the stronger side in the opening minutes of the game as scores from David Ryan, Noel Kennelly and John James Buckley put Listowel four ahead until Brosna responded with their opening score in the 10th minute of the game. Despite an early lead and wind in their backs, a high and dangerous ball in the 26th minute was robbed off the Emmets keeper in the air and punched to the back of the Listowel net to give the visitors a one point lead. By half time the score in Frank Sheehy Park was Brosna (1-04) Emmets (0-5). Listowel introduced Brendan Kelly and Derek Galvin at half time to add more scoring potential to the home side and Kelly despite carrying an injury converted within a minute of coming on. However, Brosna were in it all the way and with the wind in their favour in the second half responded swiftly at the other end. Both teams added scores and then a score from Mikey Kennelly in the 55th minute meant the two sides were level again with just over five minutes left in the game. However, an injury time score secured the league points for the visitors and it finished Brosna (1-09)  Emmets (0-11). Emmets team and scorers Declan McCarthy, Paudi Thornton, Robbie Harrington, Fergus Reen, Ger McCarthy, Shane Quinn, Sean O’Connell, Paudi Buckley, Liam Keane, Angus Fitzgerald, Noel Kennelly (0-2,1f), Billy Doyle (c), David Ryan (0-2), Mikey Kennelly (0-3,1f), John James Buckley (0-1) Subs, Brendan Kelly (0-2,1f), Derek Galvin (0-1), Conor Moriarty, Darren Halpin, Shane McCarthy. Well done to Billy Doyle who was chosen by the players as Club Captain for 2006. The weekend prior Listowel earned an away victory against St Senans. Team and Scorers not printed in last weeks notes. Declan McCarthy, Sean O’Connell, Robbie Harrington, Paudi Thornton, Ger McCarthy, Shane Quinn (0-1), Fergus Reen, Brendan Kelly, Paudi Buckley, Angus Fitzgerald (0-2), Maurice Whelan (1-01), Billy Doyle, JJ Buckley, Conor Moriarty (0-2,1f), Mikey Kennelly (0-3, 2f). ST SENANS v EMMETS
(DIV1 SENIOR NK LEAGUE RD2) SAT 11th Feb
Emmets Senior team travelled to Mountcoal at the weekend and to overcome St.Senans (1-11) to (1-08) with Maurice Whelans goal early in second half being the overall decider on an exciting enough game overall. Emmets had control of most of the game leading (0-06) to (0-02) at half time. However, Senans never adopted a lighthearted approach to the game and posed danger throughout the field as they managed to draw level with Emmets just before Whelans goal in the second half. The goal came about as manager Christy Walsh saw the need for a few changes and introduced Liam Keane, Noel Kennelly and Derek Galvin that quickly brought about a redirection of play within the Listowel game. However, both sides exchanged points and hefty challenges but it was Listowel who managed to hold out for a three-point victory on the day. Listowel Team; D McCarthy, Sean O’Connell, Robbie Harrington, Paudi Thornton, Ger McCarthy, Shane Quinn (0-1), Fergus Reen, Brendan Kelly, Paudi Buckley, Angus Fitzgerald (0-2), Maurice Whelan (1-01), Billy Doyle, JJ Buckley, Conor Moriarty (0-2,1f), Mikey Kennelly (0-3, 2f).
